Episcopal Community Services recently had the opportunity to honor the key staff of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Homeless Health Initiative (CHOP HHI). The HHI program's work with ECS St. Barnabas Mission for homeless women and their children has been an invaluable partnership.
One evening a month, pediatric physicians, dentists and nurses, as well as medical, dental and social work students, volunteer their time to visit the Mission. Children receive physicals for school and camp, get a quick dental check-up, and receive care for any immediate needs such as fevers, colds, or minor infections. Nurses from CHOP also provide monthly health education workshops for mothers
at the shelter.
For many families in shelter, the visits from CHOP are a way to address children's current medical needs and become more comfortable with medical professionals. Parents receive assistance in obtaining health insurance for their children through public programs.
"We're seeing families on their own turf, and it can be a less intimidating interaction than an office visit," said Melissa Bennett, MD. "We see this as a way to enhance healthcare providers' knowledge of homelessness and its impact on children's lives and their health."
Karen Hudson, MSW, LSW says that many children served in the shelter become regular patients at CHOP Primary Care Centers and all families are encouraged to connect with long-term primary care doctors.
